Antimacassars were widely used in the 1800’s, because people had to protect their furniture from the hair, because it was common to use a kind of hair oil from the region Macassar (present Ujung Pandang) on Celebes (present Sulawesi). But antimacassars are still used in many public locations, such as airplanes and trains. – Antimacassar word, means “Against hair oil.”
