Big breaks in young musicians’ careers have a way of blowing craters in lives and relationships. If you’re 22-year-old Lucy Dacus, in the past two years you’ve seen your first album (recorded mainly because your friend needed a college project) turn into the object of a 20-label bidding war, and then quit your day job at a photo studio in Richmond, Virginia, to become the leader of a band on the road. No wonder it’s so common for a sophomore album to end up being a breakup record.
At first blush, then, the only unpredictable thing about the opening track of Dacus’ new Historian is what a pile driver of a breakup song it is. “Night Shift” begins, “The first time I tasted somebody else’s spit, I had a coughing fit/ I mistakenly called them by your name.” The verses then cover a frustrating make-nice coffee date, fantasies of punching the ex in the teeth, rearranging timetables so as to never risk running into each other (“You’ve got a 9 to 5, so I’ll take the night shift”—that is, a musician’s schedule), and finally a stone-cold wish that someday Dacus will be able to sing even this song without thinking of her ex at all.
The music builds up gradually from almost a stark spoken-word performance of irregularly paced (though never slack) melodic lines into a whole noisy rock group on the prowl. It’s as if with each step away from the relationship, her world is widening and populating itself anew, including with, in the lyrics’ final words, “new lovers.” It’s also notice that this will be a louder, fuller-band album than her first (including string and horn sections), as Dacus sets herself in between and apart from the current camps of torchy confessional songwriters such as her friend Julien Baker as well as the new wave of women-led punk acts like Sheer Mag and Soccer Mommy (who also released a strong return this week).
What is truly surprising, though, and shows the scope of Dacus’ promise, is that after that riveting six-minute setup, she already has the breakup theme nearly out of her system. Her knack with first tracks is like her gift for first lines; in the age of streaming, it’s a superpower to know how to freeze a listener’s finger before it clicks to another song. (Her debut, No Burden, began by announcing, “I don’t wanna be funny anymore,” over surging guitars, and how could you not hang around to find out why?) But she consistently comes out of her starting sprints into emotional marathons, along routes dense with foliage and incident.
Soon, Historian becomes a record not just about disruption and loss, but about how to live with the fact of death itself. Having exited the Southern Christian faith she was raised in (as sketched here in the song “Nonbeliever”), Dacus finds herself forging her own understated 21st-century branch of existentialism. If God and (as portrayed in one of the album’s most impressive set pieces) Dacus’ devout grandmother are both dead, where to go, physically and philosophically, from there? She communicates these conundrums musically, too. “Pillar of Truth” is first sparsely melancholic, hushed around the deathbed, but gradually rings more intensely with Southern-gospel echoes, with “Amazing Grace” and “His Eye Is on the Sparrow.” At its peak, Dacus’ voice breaks for a second into a James Brown–style yelp, as if re-enacting the way that gospel became soul and R&B, that its sacred passions turned secular—while sounding a panicked cry over where that modernity may leave us when facing the void.
This preoccupation may seem odd from someone so early in her years, a young white woman coming from relative security and comfort, but for Dacus it is really about how to generate meaning. Like anyone in their early 20s, she has to decide how to act, who to be, all intensified by her new place under the spotlight. Thinking about death is a way of asking what, if anything, those choices add up to. In “Next of Kin,” kind of a prelude to “Pillar of Truth,” she sings, “I am at peace with my death,” and figures that means she’s free to “go back to bed.” In “Yours & Mine,” she tells worried friends and family who want to keep her close that she’s willing to risk getting hurt in order to do what may need to be done. (It was written about wanting to go to the street protests in Baltimore after the police-custody death of Freddie Gray.) And in the closing song, “Historians,” she sings to a friend or lover that she wishes she could know now how she’d ultimately measure up to her own best aspirations: “Was I most complete at the beginning, or the bow?/ If past you were to meet future me, would you be holding me here and now?” she concludes, in case you wondered whether she’s as deft with endings as with openings.
On No Burden, Dacus’ rounded, folky alto could sometimes bring out the too-precious side of the journallike lyrics (often based on the thousands of pages of notebooks she’s kept since middle school). It was the voice of a young person overly aware that people found her “wise beyond her years.” But here, without losing its sweetness, it’s gained flex and tension. It can be barbed or apologetic in exchanges directly addressed to ex-lovers and friends. In introspective passages, it can move from pained and fearful to hoarse and pissed off, melding with the guitar fuzz. But it can also hover at some distance from the instruments, taking on the cool authority to carry her existential queries. There’s an arresting point on the third track, “The Shell,” when she muses that if it were possible to divide the body from the self, “I’d deliver up my shell to be filled with somebody else”—and I can never decide if it’s the thought itself that’s so remarkable or the liquid, just out-of-reach manner in which her voice at once earnestly commits to it and casually tosses it away.
Historian was recorded in Nashville, Tennessee, with more professional engineering and mixing (courtesy indie veteran John Congleton) and in a week rather than the day or so it took to do No Burden, but unlike a lot of new signees, Dacus largely stuck with her main collaborators, producer Collin Pastore and guitarist Jacob Blizard, both friends since high school. The arrangements range from frilly chamber pop to Zeppelin in waltz time on “Timefighter,” all held together (despite some clumsy bits) by that sense of a shared aesthetic. This concern for continuity and intimate connection links the sound to Dacus’ lyrics, which often puzzle over how to hold on to people and places while you’re changing, and allowing them to change as well.
It’s characteristic that she used her label windfall to purchase her own house in Richmond and that she decided to sign with the venerable indie Matador because it’s stood by artists such as Yo La Tengo for decades, through high attention and low. When Dacus calls herself a historian, it’s as an emotional archivist not only of her own life and insights but of an ongoing, interconnected web of people, a community both made and found. “Me and mine,” she sings, “we’ve got a long way to go/ Before we get home.” It reminds me very much of the collectivist way that Dacus’ contemporary Lorde wrote about her friends on last year’s Melodrama, another album by a bookish and ardent young songwriter in the aftermath of early success (though on quite another scale than Dacus’). Melodrama and Historian are close enough in sensibilities and structural intricacies that they could easily swap titles, though nearly as far apart musically as their home bases in New Zealand and Virginia.
It’s tempting to ask how their parallels reflect an age cohort that’s grown up with 24-hour social interconnection and an overabundance of data on the world’s mangled condition. As confident as they are in their own voices, and as unapologetic as they are in their opinions, they’re never reckless, arguably to their detriment. They’re always accountable, conscientious of collateral damage. Their songs also shift between scenes and points of view without warning, expecting listeners to keep up, and reiterate lines and images between tracks as if picking up subplots in an extended serial narrative—sometimes letting juxtaposition hint at the meaning, other times seeking a concise line to pass along a lesson learned or at least one being given a try. I’m not hurrying to any generalizations, but in the wilderness of emerging culture, it’s always worth scribbling a few field notes.
In any case, Dacus is an artist conscious that her history’s still in the making, yet doing her best to ensure she’ll be able to vouch for her current work to her own deathbed. She deserves the loan of some of your own fleeting time.

A documentary about Supreme Court justice Ruther Bader Ginsburg directed by Betsy West and Julie Cohen, was one of the highlights of this year’s Sundance Film Festival, and the first trailer for RBG makes it easy to see why. 84-year-old Ginsburg is compelling and charming as ever, even as she reflects on the struggles she’s faced in her career: “I did see myself as kind of a kindergarten teacher in those days,” she says. “Because the judges didn’t think sex discrimination existed.”
The trailer also devotes a significant amount of time to Ginsburg’s relationship with her late husband, Martin Ginsburg, who she calls “the first boy I ever knew who cared that I had a brain,” as well as her pop culture persona, Notorious RBG. We even get a glimpse of her exercise routine, which includes weight-lifting and planking. The documentary, which also includes interviews with Gloria Steinem, Nina Totenberg, and more, will hit select theaters May 4.

Hedvig Bernitz, lektor i konstitutionell rätt vid Stockholms universitet, är en av Sveriges främsta experter på juridiken kring friskolor. I en artikel i senaste Signum reder hon ut vad som gäller i den frågan. Slutsatsen som hon drar är mycket tydlig och synnerligen intressant, nämligen att EU-rätten ger ett mycket starkt skydd för rätten att driva konfessionella friskolor i Sverige. EU-rätten verkar i praktiken göra det omöjligt för Sverige att förbjuda konfessionella friskolor. Ett sådant förbud skulle nämligen vara oförenligt med EU-rättens bestämmelser om fri rörlighet.
Bernitz slår i sin artikel fast: ”De politiska partier i Sverige som argumenterar för ett förbud mot konfessionella friskolor synes inte ha beaktat de europarättsliga problem som detta skulle innebära. Som ovan visats är det svårt att se hur ett förbud skulle kunna genomföras utan att bryta mot EU-rätten och Europakonventionen. Att starta en skola är en EU-rättslig rättighet utan begränsningar vad gäller typ av skola och typ av huvudmän.”

On Wednesday morning, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo sent a fundraising plea to the email list of the New York State Democratic Committee. The subject line: “NY Stands with #MeToo.”
In the message, Cuomo praises “women across the country” for “courageously speak out about facing sexual assault and harassment” while Donald Trump and the GOP are throwing their support behind the likes of alleged child molester Roy Moore and alleged domestic abuser Rob Porter.
“If that makes you angry, that’s good,” Cuomo writes, before his ask for donations. “But don’t just get angry, get involved and get even.”
Cuomo is an unlikely choice to headline the New York Democrats’ response to #MeToo. The governor, who today accused possible primary challenger Cynthia Nixon of being a plant from either New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio or Vladimir Putin, has drawn criticism for hiring Sam Hoyt as a senior aide in 2011—three years after Hoyt copped to having an extramarital affair with his 19-year-old intern. Emails between the two showed Hoyt, then a state legislator, telling the young woman that he wished “that i could see you do that little cheerleader move…that i could be your human lollipop…that you could tell me i am yummy (i love that)…that i could tell you that no woman has ever done for me physically what you do for me…that i could shower in your shower with all that girly stuff.”
Hoyt’s affair, and his emails, were widely publicized in 2008, three years before Cuomo appointed Hoyt as a top official at the Empire State Development Corporation. So the governor couldn’t have been too surprised when Hoyt was later accused by another woman of a yearlong spell of sexual harassment. State employee Lisa Marie Cater said Hoyt got her a job at the Department of Motor Vehicles in 2015, then used the favor to excuse repeated unwanted kisses, forcible genital touching, and nonstop phone calls, emails, and sexts. Per the lawsuit she filed, she called the governor’s office on two separate occasions to complain about Hoyt’s alleged harassment, emailed Cuomo through his website, and sent a message to his Facebook page.
According to Cater, Hoyt said the governor’s office told him to “make this go away,” so he paid her $50,000 to keep quiet. Indeed, Cuomo’s office admits that three different state agencies looked at Cater’s complaint against Hoyt, but took no action. Cater claims she spoke to Noreen Van Doren, a lawyer with Cuomo’s office, who asked, “What is that you want, money?” About a year after that conversation, in the midst of a state investigation into his behavior, Hoyt resigned his position. Hoyt has denied the allegations, saying they are the result of a consensual relationship that went sour.
Cuomo’s undeserved trust in Hoyt put him in a position of power, from which Hoyt was able to allegedly sexually manipulate and assault a fellow government employee. That’s bad enough—but Cuomo’s response to the whole debacle was even worse. In December, at the height of conversations about sexual misconduct in the media, journalist Karen DeWitt asked Cuomo if he would do anything, in light of Hoyt, to root out sexual harassment in the state government. Cuomo, in a manner reminiscent of President Trump, tried to deflect the question by asking DeWitt what she was going to do to stop harassment in her own industry. “It’s about you. And journalism. And it’s about you and journalism. And it’s about state government. And it’s about carpentry. And it’s about trade forces,” Cuomo said. “We’ll have policies in state government, obviously, that affects state government, but I think you miss the point. When you say it’s state government, you do a disservice to women, with all due respect, even though you’re a woman. It’s not government, it’s society.”
“I understand. But can you just name one thing?” DeWitt asked, returning to her initial question. “No,” Cuomo said.
Huh! It’s kind of rich to see the name of the man who couldn’t think of a single thing he’d do to combat harassment in the “From” field of today’s fundraising email, which announced “a new campaign to capture the momentum of the #MeToo movement and turn it into action.” Ostensibly, that “action” is legislative change. But from the outside, it looks like it just means money. Cuomo and the New York Democrats noticed unprecedented numbers of women speaking up about sexual abusers in their workplaces and everyday lives, and they saw a marketing opportunity.
Unlike other unseemly co-optations of pop culture phenomena (see: “Pokémon Go-to-the-Polls”), the #MeToo movement has real political implications for legislation that addresses campus sexual assault, sexual harassment settlements in Congress, and forced arbitration, among other issues. In that sense, it’s right for politicians to take cues from constituents who are making demands for reform. Cuomo, like Democrats in Congress, has proposed a ban on using taxpayer dollars to settle sexual harassment claims within the government and a requirement that all such settlements be publicly disclosed. But the email he sent this morning included no mention of #MeToo-related legislative or executive actions he or the party hope to pursue. All he offered was a blanket statement in support of a hashtag, effectively turning an urgent, deeply felt reckoning with abuse into a tagline. The email’s closing line was even cornier and further divorced from the spirit of the movement: “If you continue to turn a blind eye to sexual harassment, this November your #TimesUp!” To Cuomo’s constituents, many of whom surely recall the governor’s mishandling of the Hoyt debacle, that line probably read a bit different than intended.
I always ask the students what it is they like about Shark Tank. The answer is invariably, “It’s entertaining.”
Well, there’s your answer. If the purpose of your business presentation is entertainment, then Shark Tank could be held up as a model. But the purpose of a business presentation is rarely entertainment. The purpose is most often the successful communication of information necessary for consequential decision-making.
Shark Tank is entertaining to a degree that satisfies primetime network television standards. But it’s a mistake to:
The best thing about Shark Tank is the energy and enthusiasm that contestants bring to the show. Most of the erstwhile entrepreneurs that I’ve seen on the show seem to truly believe in their products and enjoy the opportunity to showcase them. But that excitement easily tips over into hucksterism.
It’s been more than 10 years since Juno blew the roof off the indie game, catapulting screenwriter Diablo Cody and director Jason Reitman into the mainstream. Since then, the team has collaborated on Jennifer’s Body in 2009 (where Reitman acted as producer) and Young Adult in 2011. All three of these films were notable for their quippy dialogue and three-dimensional female characters. Now, seven years later, it appears the duo is back for yet another bitingly honest take on womanhood.
Tully, which premiered at this year’s Sundance Film Festival and boasts one of the most striking posters in recent memory, centers on beleaguered mother Marlo (frequent Cody-Reitman collaborator and producer Charlize Theron). Overworked and underappreciated, the stay-at-home mom is feeling the maternal burnout when the titular Tully (Mackenzie Davis) arrives on the scene. With the help of her idealistic new nanny, Marlo begins a cathartic journey of self-discovery that, in true Cody fashion, is equal parts tenderness and acerbity.
The film’s latest trailer perfectly encapsulates that bittersweet balance, shifting seamlessly between dry humor and warmth. The preview takes viewers through Marlo’s life as an exhausted mother of three, bluntly showing everything from spilt breastmilk to sagging skin. When Tully shows up, it’s with Mary Poppins–esque timeliness. Marlo is at a breaking point, and Tully pulls her back from the edge. One exchange in the trailer encapsulates the film’s drama-comedy balance:
“You’re empty,” Tully notes to a breastfeeding Marlo.
“Yeah,” Marlo sighs, gazing hollowly into the distance.
Tully corrects herself after an awkward beat. “No, you’re empty on this side,” she amends, referring to Marlo’s milk.
As the trailer progresses, the empathetic bond forming between Marlo and Tully clashes with Marlo’s existential dread. Delightfully childish scenes and sweet family moments punctuate the preview as Tully and Marlo learn more from each other. For a scant two minutes, the entire thing is awash in female compassion. This is in part due to soft visuals from cinematographer Eric Steelberg (500 Days of Summer) and Diablo Cody’s frank dialogue. “We might look like we’re all better,” Marlo says of women, “but if you look close, we’re covered in concealer.”
We’re still waiting to see better stories by and about women consistently on screen. If this latest trailer is any indication, Tully offers a groundbreaking, frank representation of ambivalent motherhood. It’s still taboo to see imperfect mothers in fiction, but if anybody has made a career on artfully breaking taboos, it’s Diablo Cody.
This latest project from Cody, Reitman, and Theron looks every bit as real as fans have come to expect. Now all we have to do is grab some tissues and wait for the April 20 premiere.

Academy Award–winning actor Russell Crowe separated from his wife, Danielle Spencer, in 2012, and their divorce is set to be finalized this spring. In … celebration? the actor is cheerfully auctioning off a trove of possessions that he calls “three rooms full of things I’ll no longer have to care for, document, clean, tune, and insure.” The Sotheby’s Australia auction is set for April 7, “a date of particular significance as both the actor’s birthday and wedding anniversary.”
Both the split and the sale seem, by all appearances, to be perfectly amicable. “Just as we collaborate on the upbringing of our kids, it’s easy for us to work together on something like this” the actor told an Australian newspaper. “I think she feels the same way I do in regards to just moving on things that help create space for the future.” The sale is titled “The Art of Divorce” and the cover of the auction catalog featured a tuxedo-clad Crowe raising a cocktail at the reader, as if he’s personally inviting you into what amounts to a very fancy garage sale. Luckily for the public, the catalog is available for viewing in full online.
Much of the collection serves as confirmation of exactly what you’d imagine the inside of Russell Crowe’s storage locker to look like: piles of guitars (he was in a band), a tremendous amount of cricket memorabilia, and a mounted Cretaceous period reptile skull that Crowe bought from “Mr. Leonardo DiCaprio, Los Angeles.” The trove also includes the usual post-divorce deacquisitions like jewelry, watches, and art.
Naturally, the items making headlines this week are the movie memorabilia and costumes, including Gladiator ephemera like armor, multiple life-size prop horses, and a “fully functioning replica Roman chariot.” Other costume items include chainmail (Robin Hood, 2010), Doc Martins (Romper Stomper, 1992), ice skates (Mystery, Alaska, 1999), and a leather jockstrap (Cinderella Man, 2005) that collectively serve as a reminder that being a movie star means being paid to play dress-up. There’s also a tabletop model of Capt. Jack Aubrey’s ship from Master and Commander, a gorgeous 2003 movie about male friendship and honor. The boat could be yours for $800.
The most expensive item listed is a 19th-century violin played by Crowe in Master and Commander, which could go for up to $140,000. The cheapest include a Pittsburgh Steelers scarf he wore in the forgettable journalism drama State of Play. Then there’s the more mysterious stuff: a Muhammad Ali plaster relief life cast, a nautical rum cask, and a huge “maritime-themed” iron-backed bench designed by Crowe himself for his apartment at “Woolloomooloo,” in case you forgot he was Australian.
For casual browsers, the catalog is best experienced not as a referendum on the “Art of Divorce” but as a quirky guide to one man’s passing hobbies and experiences over the last three decades, should one be susceptible to such rabbit holes. One moment you’re learning that Crowe has been collecting work by the Australian painter Charles Blackman, and next thing you know you’re on the website of Australia’s leading breeder of Catahoula Leopard Dogs reading about the time Crowe visited the breeder’s sugar cane farm to film a music video for a song he had written inspired by a painting.

Starting this week, businesses can now identify as owned, led, or founded by women, by enabling the women-led attribute from their Google My Business dashboard. Attributes appear on a business’s Google listing on Maps and Search and give customers more details like "Has Wi-Fi" and "Outdoor seating” to help them decide where to go.

Mannen blir aggressiv mot busschauffören som larmar efter polis.
När polispatrullen anländer till platsen framkommer det att mannen är så berusad att han behövde omhändertas för tillnyktring. I nuläget är inte mannen misstänkt för något brott.

Slår man upp historieböckerna ser man tydligt att kvinnors historia inte fått samma plats som männens. Samma gäller på sajten Wikipedia. För att bidra till en mer rättvisande bild har Utrikesdepartementet tillsammans med Wikimedia därför tagit initiativ till eventet #WikiGap. Den 8 mars, på internationella kvinnodagen, anordnas därför parallella events i nära 50 länder.

I have a really long commute, and the last thing I need is to be surprised by car trouble. Thankfully, cars nowadays monitor just about everything bumper-to-bumper, warning us in advance before minor issues become major problems. Auto mechanics use diagnostics to pinpoint the exact component that needs attention. That’s the kind of real-time monitoring and predictive intelligence ServiceNow® IT Operations Management brings to the enterprise—and our own use is a great example.
For years, ServiceNow has used IT Service Management and IT Operations Management to dramatically improve the quality of our shared infrastructure services, and we’ve added capabilities as the solutions have evolved. Here’s a look at how we use ITOM to stop service outages before they start.
Every time there is a big wireless, telecom or technology trade show, the big question I am always asked by the media as a telecom and wireless analyst, is simple. What was the key message or take away from the show? Last week, at the world’s largest wireless trade show, Mobile World Congress 2018 in Barcelona, Spain, the answer was clear. First it is about 5G, with plenty of AI and IoT mixed in. Yes, our world is rapidly changing.
So, what will 5G, AI and IoT do for us? Today, in our 4G world, we can download a movie we want to watch in roughly 6 minutes. Using 5G, we will download the movie in roughly six seconds. It will change everything. It will encourage new business creation. It will empower new ideas and new companies just like we have seen with Uber and Lyft in recent years.
Today the Khronos Group has released Vulkan 1.1, a new version of the open source, low-level API that brings many improvements. Among these improvements is the integration of a number of extensions for Vulkan 1.0, including those for simultaneously rendering multiple views of the same image, using multiple GPUs in one system, and cross-process API interoperability that is used in demanding applications like virtual reality. Additionally Vulkan 1.1 comes with Subgroup Operations that enables highly-efficient data sharing and manipulation between tasks running in parallel on a GPU and the ability to perform rendering and display operations on resources that cannot be accessed or copied.
Along with the release of Vulkan 1.1 is the SPIR-V 1.3 specification for shaders to support subgroup operations and make enhanced compiler optimizations possible. Also concerning shaders, and very important, Vulkan 1.1 Core supports HLSL, which is a Microsoft shader language, meaning DirectX shaders can be used by Vulkan 1.1. Easier translation of HLSL to SPIR-V also means we may see improved support for Vulkan in the future, by making it easier to develop for both it and DirectX 12, but we could also see Vulkan running on top of DirectX 12 in some application too. The Vulkan Ecosystem Forum has also been created to make sharing issues and opportunities between developers easier.
There are a number of features to be interested in here, especially subgroup operations and the built-in support for device groups, making multi-GPU a part of the core API and easier to enable.

For those invested in making news organizations more diverse, inclusive places, particularly for women, the past few years haven’t offered much in the way of good news. ASNE’s latest newsroom diversity survey, published last fall, found that women made up 39.1 percent of all newsroom employees in 2017 — up only slightly from 37.35 percent in 2001.
In a similarly dismal report, the Women’s Media Center, an organization created to increase the ranks and visibility of women in media, found last year that men produced 62.3 percent of news reports at 20 of top U.S. news outlets last year.
This week, the group published a follow up to its 2017 report that drills deeper into why women of color are underrepresented in media companies, and what those companies can do to improve it. Some of these insights come via prominent women in the industry, including Soledad O’Brien, Joy Reid, and April Ryan.
Here are a few of the report’s findings and suggestions:
— More diverse newsrooms mean fewer missed stories (and more readers). The choice between diversity and finances is a false one, argues center president Julie Burton. “Fiscal responsibility and journalistic excellence can and should exist together; the authenticity that diversity brings can increase audience interest and loyalty.”
— Digital news has a white founder problem. According to P. Kim Bui, editor-at-large at NowThis, digital media start-ups are run by young white men because young white men “tend to be the ones who have the capital to start a company.” The problem here emerges when those founders start to hire employees, who are highly likely to come from similar social and financial circles. “People hire people who like them, who have a similar pedigree, and who tend to be in their networks,” said Nikole Hannah-Jones, racial injustice reporter at The New York Times Magazine. “Often newsrooms say they want journalists of color, people whose skin tone is different, but not necessarily people who think differently and have had different experiences than [white people].”
— Lack of diversity is a problem across the digital media industry. The Online News Association doesn’t track diversity numbers, and for the rare organizations that do publish these figures, things aren’t promising. At BuzzFeed, one of the rare publishers to issue a diversity report annually, 15 percent of its U.S. employees are black or Hispanic, along with only 8 percent of its managers and 6 percent of its top leadership.
— More media organizations should release these sorts of diversity reports that break down employment numbers by race and gender. For the WMC, the first step towards improving newsroom diversity is keeping track of how things look today. “This transparency would allow comprehensive tracking of progress or regress for diverse women in the workplace,” the report argues.
— Change starts at the top. The WMC report closes with a section detailing the concrete steps executives can take to improve the numbers of women in newsroom ranks. First and foremost, CEOs should make it clear that diversity is a priority for their organizations. It’s also important to encourage “candid conversations about gender and racial parity,” and how to make that parity happen. The WMC report also recommends that that executives foster better work-life balance via flexible schedules and more generous paternity and maternity leave policies.
— Tame those comment sections. “Responses to news coverage that are posted on your site can shape perception/misperception of your news organization’s own philosophies and bent,” the report reads. “Make sure reader/viewer feedback is neither needlessly inflammatory, provocative, malicious, racist, or sexist, nor a vehicle for spreading disinformation.”

This might be an interesting rumor to anyone looking to get a new GPU in the next few months as some market watchers are claiming ASRock might try to enter the graphics card market next month. This rumor comes from Digitimes and also says ASRock would focus on AMD GPUs for its cards.
Currently ASRock makes motherboards for a number of markets, including high end motherboards for consumers but also boards for servers and other products. Last year was a good year for it, in part because Gigabyte Technology went through reorganization, creating an opportunity for ASRock to ship more motherboards, and there is high demand for its cryptocurrency mining motherboards as well.
If this turns out to be true, ASRock entering the graphics card market could disrupt others already in it as the supply of GPUs to add-in board partners is not unlimited and cannot just grow to provide for another company. April is not that far away so we will see what happens.

8,5 miljoner kronor lät då inte som någon skyhög summa, men den ger heller inte hela bilden.
Åtta miljoner i en fond
Klubben har inte fått alla pengar för Europaspelet. ÖFK har tagit många kostnader under fjolåret för att inte så mycket ska försvinna i skatt.
Data protection and privacy has always been a top priority at SAP. As well as being a leading cloud company responsible for processing large volumes of customer data safe and secure, we’re also a large global employer with nearly 88,000 employees around the world – and a significant proportion of these are based in the EU. Our existing global data protection and privacy policy outlines a minimum standard for handling personal data in compliance with current regulations. Like every other company that processes the personal data of EU residents, we needed to review this policy and our working practices in line with the requirements of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).
Last year Intel launched its 8000-series CPUs using the Coffee Lake architecture and along with it the new Z370 chipset to support it. Some had noticed this chipset's socket and that of the older Z170 and Z270 chipsets were all LGA 1151 sockets, so physically the newest CPUs could be dropped into the older motherboards. Unfortunately for anyone wanting a drop-in upgrade, this would not be the case as Intel has limited Coffee Lake to Z370, but in an October interview with Bit-Tech, an Asus employee stated the limitation is a decision of Intel's and not necessarily on a hardware level. It would require changes to the Management Engine and BIOS, and while the power delivery for the new CPUs is different, the Asus representative said it was not much different.
I suspect that even without the Asus employee statements there would still have been modders trying, and they have indeed succeeded in getting some, but not all Coffee Lake CPUs to boot on the older Z170 chipset. The modders have even put together guides on Overclock.net, but they are limited to working on ASRock motherboards. The process involves tweaking the CPU's microcode, the integrated GPU's UEFI GOP driver, and Management Engine bootstraps so it is hardly something most people would be interested in doing, but it does still demonstrate a proof-of-concept, if nothing else.
In their testing, the modders were able to boot a Core i3-8300 chip on the older motherboards, but not a Core i7-8700 CPU. The reason they give is a power issue, as the i7 has a higher core count. It will be interesting to see what additional work is done, and if we will see modders succeed with other motherboards and with the more powerful CPUs.

Next month is when the Zen+ based and 12 nm fabricated Ryzen 2000 series of CPUs from AMD are supposed to launch, but it appears a lot of information about them has leaked out. Like all leaks, these should be considered rumors and not completely trustworthy, but time will tell, and it might not even be long. The leak comes as slides from and in the lower left corner the NDA information is stated, including the embargo date of March 15, which means, if this is true, we might see it confirmed just next week.
On to the details which show four Ryzen 2000 CPUs launching: 2600; 2600X, 2700; and 2700X. Like the 1000 series, the 2600(X) CPUs are 6 core/12 thread parts while the 2700(X) are 8 core/16 thread parts but they all come with a cooler, something that was not the case for the X-series CPUs before. You might notice the lack of a Ryzen 7 2800X, replacing the top-binned 1800X, which is fueling some speculation about when it might appear and what its specifications will be. According to the slides, the 2700X will have a base clock of 3.7 GHz and a boost of 4.35 GHz with a TDP of 105 W. Its price will be $369 while the 2700 will cost $299, have a base clock of 3.2 GHz and a boost of 4.1 GHz in its 65 W TDP. Naturally the 2600 and 2600X come in cheaper at $199 and $249 respectively, along with base clocks of 3.4 GHz and 3.6 GHz with boosts of 3.9 GHz and 4.25 GHz respectively. The TDPs for these two chips are 65 W and 95 W, with the 2600X naturally being the higher power part.
The 2000 series offers more than just higher speeds but also other internal improvements, such as Precision Boost 2, which has been talked about before. Precision Boost is meant to increase the clock speed of a CPU's cores depending on the workload and situation with Precision Boost 2 being able to do so at a finer level, extracting more performance from the chip. Also XFR 2 will push the CPUs to higher speeds, based on the chip's temperature, but the X-series processors have more than these two technologies to improve performance. Precision Boost Overdrive and XFR 2 Enhanced will bring the speeds even higher for these CPUs, but only on the X470 and B450 chipsets. If you want these features, you will need one of the newer motherboards and not one of the current 300-series motherboards with a BIOS update.
Also among the slides are a couple comparing performance between the 2700X and either the 1800X or Intel Core i7-8700K. According to these slides, the 2700X is on average just 7.7% below the 8700K in performance, at 1080P ultra with a GTX 1080, and on average 5% faster than the 1800X.
Personally I am looking forward to March 15, to see if these slides come out officially and what other information might come with them.

Idrottare med intellektuell funktionsnedsättning får inte vara med i Paralympics. Därför är den tävlingen stängd för skidåkaren Johnatan Öjerteg.
– Jag vill gärna att de ska komma in och tävla lite mer. Det betyder mycket för mig om de får tävla.
Nyligen var det Olympiska spelen, OS, i Sydkorea i Asien.
På fredag börjar nästa stora tävling därborta i Sydkorea, nämligen Paralympics, som är för idrottare med fysiska funktionsnedsättningar. Bland andra skidåkare som ser väldigt dåligt och ishockeyspelare som sitter i en kälke för att de inte kan röra sina ben.
Men de idrottare som har intellektuell funktionsnedsättning får inte vara med i Paralympics vintertävlingar, utan bara på Sommar-Paralympics.
Spännande med tävlingJohnatan Öjerteg, som du hörde nyss, är 15 år och bor i Borlänge i Dalarna. Han har adhd och en lättare intellektuell funktionsnedsättning. Han tävlar i alpin skidåkning där man ska åka så snabbt som möjligt nerför en backe.
Johnatan tycker att tävlingar är viktiga:
– Det är till stor del deras förtjänst att jag håller igång så mycket.
Skulle du inte träna lika mycket om det inte var tävlingar också?
– Nej.
Vad är det som gör det extra roligt när det är tävling?
– All adrenalin som kommer upp i kroppen hela tiden och man går in i en stor tävlingsbubbla. Jag försöker vinna över mina lagkompisar hela tiden.
Som vi sa är Vinter-Paralympics tävlingar alltså stängda för idrottare med intellektuell funktionsnedsättning. Men det finns två andra stora tävlingar i världen för den här gruppen: INAS-VM och Special Olympics. Och i just Special Olympics tog Johnatan Öjerteg en medalj förra året:
– För det var massor av folk att tävla mot. Det var Norge och Japan. Ja, just det. Jag vann över Japan, för de kan inte åka skidor. Det får du inte klippa bort.
Får jag inte klippa bort det?
– Nej.
Hur gick det på tävlingarna?
– Fyra på storslalom och på slalom blev jag etta.
Coolt! Har du medalj också?
– Ja, stort guld hemma.
TYLÖSAND. Stefan Leskinen, klubbchef på Lindesbergs Golfklubb, har fått en utmärkelse som inte går av för hackor. ”Steff” utsågs nämligen i veckan till ”Golf Manager of the Year”, Årets klubbchef, av Golfadministratörernas Förening i samband med årsmötet i Tylösand under början av veckan.
– Det känns jättekul, säger Stefan Leskinen. Det här är ett riktigt erkännande för att vi är på rätt väg.
Stefan Leskinen går in på sitt tredje år som klubbchef för Lindesbergs Golfklubb och de flesta medlemmar kan intyga att mycket hänt under de här åren.
– Det handlar, tycker jag, om att vara ödmjuk inför vem en golfbana ska vara till för, säger Leskinen. Det här handlar verkligen inte bara om mig, utan även om styrelsen, de anställda, våra samarbetspartners och våra medlemmar.
Stefan Leskinen menar att alla klubbar jobbar utifrån sina förutsättningar och att de fem nominerade till utmärkelsen ”Årets klubbchef” därför är svåra att jämföra.
– Jag tror att olika anläggningar har olika typer av klubbchefer, säger Stefan. Men vi bryr oss om de som finns inom 15 minuters avstånd och vi försöker utveckla samtidigt som vi håller det vi lovar.
Senast förra säsongen var det en padelbana som uppfördes på golfbanan och under 2018 kommer ett mindre hotell att byggas.
– Nytt är kul och kul är kul, säger Stefan med ett leende. Men tittar man på den undersökning som gjorts på våra klubbar i Sverige så ligger vi i topp när det gäller hur många medlemmar som skulle rekommendera Lindesbergs Golfklubb till andra.
Många medlemmar håller säkert med om att atmosfären har förändrats på Lindesbergs Golfklubb under de senaste åren och Stefan Leskinen är medveten om att den atmosfären måste bestå och bli ännu bättre.
– Vi finns ju till för våra medlemmar, säger Steff. Samtidigt är vi bara i början av vår resa.
Jag ser för övrigt att vår lilla gunstling Donald Trump haft besök. Vår alldeles egen lilla gunstling Stefan Löfven har ju åkt till USA för att få audiens. Uppenbart är att den stora frågan var frågan om Donald Trumps önskan om ett handelskrig. Sån't är ju bra enligt Donald Duc... f'låt Trump. Dom är lätta att vinna hävdar han. Vem som vinner har jag dock lite svårt att föreställa mig.
Hur som helst så har jag ett tips på ett område där världens länder kan slå tillbaka rejält. Där det nog kan kännas. Jag föreslår att världens länder vägrar köpa amerikansk militär utrustning! Inga stridsflygplan, inga kanoner, ingenting. Så kan han sitta där med ett ökat pris på stål. För det är ju det som kommer att hända. När importerat stål beläggs med strafftullar kan amerikanska tillverkare höja sina priser. Bit där det känns!

Socialdemokraten Åsa Regnér slutar i den svenska regeringen och börjar istället jobba för Förenta Nationerna, FN.
– Politikerna i regeringen bestämmer tillsammans, men Åsa Regnér har haft ett säskilt ansar för frågor som berör funktionsnedsättningar.
Som vad då?
– Personlig assistans, gruppboenden och daglig verksamhet till exempel.

– Det berättar statsministern imorgon.
Vilket blir hennes nya jobb?
– Hon blir chef för en organisation inom FN som jobbar för kvinnors rättigheter.

– Ja, Åsa Regnér kommer att bli en av de viktigaste cheferna inom FN. Hon kommer också att bli en nära medarebetare till FN:s allra högsta ledare António Guterres.
Varför får just hon jobbet?
– Kanske för att Sveriges regeringen har sagt att kvinnornas rättigheter runt om i världen är extra viktiga.

I nästan två veckor har de strejkat, lärarna i den amerikanska delstaten West Virginia. De har strejkat för bättre arbetsvillkor och rimliga löner. Iförda röda t-shirts har de krävt att få bli lyssnade på.
Och så i tisdags, efter nästan två veckors strejkande, fick de igenom sitt främsta krav. Då skrev den republikanske delstatsguvernören, James C. Justice, under ett lagförslag som ger både lärare och andra statsanställda i delstaten en femprocentig löneökning. Detta trots att den ännu mer konservative republikanen Mitch Carmichael, president i delstatssenaten, lyckades stoppa ett första lagförslag i förra veckan.
Strejken har inneburit att samtliga offentliga skolor i delstaten har varit stängda i nio dagar och den har krävt ett enormt mod från lärarnas sida. West Virginia, som en gång i tiden hade en mäktig arbetarrörelse ledd av starka gruvarbetarfack, är idag en delstat med svaga fackförbund.
Lärarna fick rådet att återvända till arbetet så fort guvernören gav ett första löfte om löneökning i förra veckan. Men lärarna lyssnade inte på facket utan bestämde sig för att fortsätta strejka tills löftet blev lag.
Löneökningen har varit det främsta kravet, men lärarna har även krävt vissa lättnader när det gäller de kraftigt stigande sjukförsäkringskostnaderna, kostnader som de inte har råd med. Guvernören har lovat att se över den frågan och många lärare säger nu att de kommer att gå ut i strejk igen om inte också det löftet infrias. De menar att den femprocentiga lönehöjningen annars kommer att ätas upp av sjukförsäkringen.
Lärarna i West Virginia är bland de lägst betalda i sin yrkeskategori i hela USA och har inte haft en generell löneökning på fyra år. De gick ut i strejk den 22 februari och meddelade att måttet var rågat. ”Lärare i hela delstaten gick samman kring ett gemensamt mål. Målet är egentligen inte främst löneökningen. Det är att få den respekt vi förtjänar från de styrande. Jag tycker att vårt mål uppnåddes idag”, sade den 54-åriga stödundervisningsläraren Renita Benson, från Calhoun County, till New York Times i tisdags.

En tredjedel av personerna i denna ålder förlitar sig fortfarande på ekonomisk hjälp från sina föräldrar.
Personer i 30-årsåldern oroar sig generellt över att kunna spara till pensionen och att skapa en stabil ekonomisk situation för att ha möjlighet att försörja framtida barn.
