Raw, cooked, dehydrated, or steamed placentas: More American mothers are eating the organ that supports their babies after childbirth.
And why, you may ask?
Proponents — who include a small number of celebrities and mommy bloggers — claim it does wonders for new moms, from relieving pain to preventing postpartum depression and enhancing milk production and nutrition.
There’s just one problem: There’s no good evidence that placentophagy — eating one’s own placenta — actually carries any of these health benefits. And a new report suggests moms who engage in the practice may actually harm their newborn babies.
A group of doctors and public health officials from Oregon, writing in the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report last week, describe the case of a baby who was born healthy and at term, but then came down with a deadly bacterial infection. The baby was eventually diagnosed with late-onset group B strep disease (or GBS), which caused breathing difficulties. (Complications of GBS can include deafness and developmental disabilities. Up to 6 percent of babies with the disease die.)
After investigating the source of the illness, the doctors found out that the mom had eaten her own placenta after birth in capsule form. They discovered that the strain of bacteria in the placenta pills was the same one that sickened the baby.
The mom, the doctors reported, had requested her placenta after her delivery, and sent it to a company that dehydrated the organ and put it into capsule form. Three days after her baby was born, the mom started eating two capsules filled with her placenta, three times a day. The GBS bacteria in those pills were probably passed on to her baby during breastfeeding, the researchers said.
The companies that prepare placentas for moms aren’t regulated by the Food and Drug Administration. “No standards exist for processing placenta for consumption,” the authors wrote. Since human tissue can carry infectious diseases and bacteria, if the tissue isn’t properly sterilized, those health risks can be passed on to infants.
In this case, the company (which was not named in the report) claimed it “cleaned, sliced, and dehydrated [the placenta] at 115°F–160°F, then ground and placed [it] into about 115–200 gelatin capsules, and stored at room temperature,” the CDC report said. That clearly wasn’t enough to kill off the harmful bacteria.
Ultimately, the Oregon baby survived the infection after receiving two courses of antibiotics. But the case study demonstrates placenta pills can carry serious health risks, and that new moms should avoid them, the CDC report said.
“Cleaned, sliced, and dehydrated” placenta has no proven health benefitsAn online survey of the prevalence of placenta eating after birth found it’s mostly white women who partake in placentophagy — and the practice has been growing in popularity in recent years. Women report hearing about placenta eating in the media, from the likes of celebrity moms Kim and Kourtney Kardashian, January Jones, and Alicia Silverstone who have been touting the benefits of ingesting placenta over the past couple of years.
People who boost placenta eating often note that most mammals (with the exception of camels and aquatic mammals) eat their placentas after birth, and say that this “natural” practice must be good for humans too. They also report doing it to avert or treat postpartum depression.
But as one literature review on placenta eating concluded, the animal data isn’t robust enough to translate to humans, and the human data is also lacking.
Until further notice, new moms should avoid the pills, said Dr. Catherine Spong, a placenta expert and the deputy director of the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development at the National Institutes of Health.
“We have very little information available, and the studies we have do not show any benefit and do not substantiate the claims that are made,” said Spong.
As is often the case, there’s a huge disconnect between celebrity health advice and science — and in this instance, one that carries potentially deadly side effects for babies.
It’s a subtle change in language that reveals just how global alliances are shifting under President Donald Trump. German Chancellor Angela Merkel presented the conservative Christian Democratic Union election manifesto on Monday and amid talk of tax cuts and a boost in security, there was a slight change in wording: The United States was no longer described as a friend. Four years ago, the joint program of the CDU and its Bavarian sister party, the Christian Social Union, referred to the United States as Germany’s “most important friend” outside of Europe. Now? The United State is Germany’s “most important partner” outside of Europe.
That was not the only change in the wording that reveals a shift in relations with Washington. The 2013 program also described Germany’s “friendship” with the United States as a “cornerstone” of the country’s international relations. But now, any reference to the words “friend” and “friendship” have been nixed from the program, Reuters reported.
Although Merkel’s party has not commented on the shift, the change does seem to line up with those of German citizens. A Pew Research Center poll released last week showed only 35 percent of Germans have a favorable view of the United States, down from 57 percent when Obama was president.
Opinion polls suggest Merkel will easily win a fourth term in office in September.
Earlier this year, Apple began renovations of its Fifth Avenue retail store with the goal of more than doubling its size. Details on the project have been somewhat unclear throughout the project, but a new report today from MacMagazine says that Apple’s flagship retail location will reopen towards the end of 2018…
Regardless of his intentions, Trump’s tweet aligned him with violent hate speech.
Over the weekend, Donald Trump tweeted an inflammatory GIF of himself symbolically beating up CNN.
On its face, the the tweet appeared to many to be a humorous jibe — just the latest shot in Trump’s ongoing war with CNN and the news media in general, and another attention-grabbing tweet from a man who’s become known for them:
#FraudNewsCNN #FNN pic.twitter.com/WYUnHjjUjg
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) July 2, 2017
But it quickly spawned outrage from many progressives, politicians, and media outlets — including CNN itself, which issued a statement noting, “It is a sad day when the President of the United States encourages violence against reporters.”
And while Twitter and the White House both defended the tweet against such claims, things took a turn once the source of the GIF was discovered to be a Reddit forum known for Islamophobia, racism, and frequently violent hate speech.
In that context, the tweet takes on a new meaning, one that has little to do with whether it was explicitly threatening, or what Trump’s intentions were in posting it.
The GIF in Trump’s tweet was originally posted to Reddit’s largest pro-Trump alt-right communityTrump has long targeted CNN in his general war on the news media, famously labeling CNN “fake news” and frequently bashing the network in speeches and on Twitter. But his ire for the network seems to have hit a fever pitch in the wake of CNN’s recent retraction of a story related to the FBI’s ongoing investigation of the Trump campaign’s ties to Russia, and debate over the president’s relationship to the news media as a whole and to CNN in particular has been frequent on both sides of the aisle.
That’s the atmosphere into which Reddit user HanAssholeSolo released the original GIF version of the clip in the president’s tweet, posting it to Reddit’s largest alt-right community, r/The_Donald, on Wednesday, June 28; he would later claim to have edited and watermarked the GIF himself.
The_Donald is a huge and hugely controversial part of Reddit that exploded in popularity over the course of 2016, as Trump’s presidential campaign gained momentum. At one point, right-wing extremism within The_Donald was so intense that it caused the forum to fracture, before growing even more popular and solidifying its position as Reddit’s main alt-right hub. A New York Times profile of the subreddit published in November called it “one of the most influential communities within one of the most significant websites on the internet”; the Times characterized it as “home to copious Islamophobia, trolling of liberals and near constant bashing of Hillary Clinton.”
The_Donald has also been a major conduit for alt-right fringe conspiracies like Pizzagate and other rumors to find their way into the mainstream. And despite the prevalence of racism and extremism present within the forum, Trump’s campaign staff have said that they monitored The_Donald and other alt-right communities on Reddit and elsewhere throughout the election.
Initially, HanAssholeSolo’s post attracted typical reactions from other forum members and gained no further attention. GIFs like this one, in which one or more “characters” are labeled in a way that transforms the action of a GIF into allegory, are common meme parlance. And there is no shortage of anti-CNN GIFs floating around The_Donald.
However, at some point in the four days after HanAssholeSolo’s original post, someone modified HanAssholeSolo’s GIF by adding audio and converting it to a video format. And that’s when it apparently found its way into the hands of the president, who tweeted it.
“Congratulations /u/HanAssholeSolo, your dankery has been tweeted by the President of the United States,” ran the most popular response to the original GIF thread.
“Wow!! I never expected my meme to be retweeted by the God Emporer [sic] himself!!!” HanAssholeSolo responded, while the rest of r/The_Donald waxed gleeful about their moment in the spotlight. The official r/The_Donald Twitter account celebrated by posting additional GIFs of Trump wrestling CNN:
Garbage journalism. @jaketapper @VanJones68 @wolfblitzer #FraudNewsCNN pic.twitter.com/FOOh7AJP3B
— /r/The_Donald (@thedonaldreddit) July 3, 2017
At a glance, it’s easy to write off the incident as another example of Trump riling up the media with a distracting incidental tweet, another bizarre example of the convergence of modern politics and social media:
In 2007 if you said "One day President Trump will tweet out a GIF from Reddit user HanAssholeSolo" people would think you were bananapants.
— Jeet Heer (@HeerJeet) July 2, 2017
But there’s a reason to take Trump’s tweet seriously, and that is its direct connection to the violence the alt-right routinely espouses.
Regardless of Trump’s intentions, his tweet was interpreted by the alt-right as support for their racist beliefsOnce HanAssholeSolo was identified as the creator of the CNN GIF, journalists were quick to identify and dig into his Reddit history, unearthing a litany of blatantly racist remarks.
Trump posted a GIF that apparently originated with this Reddit user, who regularly uses the N-word. Warning: the screenshots are truly vile. pic.twitter.com/xZYAUV4i11
— Brian Klaas (@brianklaas) July 2, 2017
(HanAssholeSolo reportedly attempted to edit his past posts to remove some of his more offensive comments, including racial slurs, but not before people captured screenshots of several of his most objectionable statements.)
The offensive and racist ideologies expressed in HanAssholeSolo’s comments are representative of much of the discussion that regularly takes place in The_Donald, and some members of the forum have interpreted Trump’s tweet of HanAssholeSolo’s GIF as support for their beliefs, based on its origins alone.
In the past, Trump has explicitly distanced himself from the alt-right and its extremism, stating, “I don’t want to energize the group, and I disavow the group, and if they are energized I want to look into it and find out why.”
Yet, as cataloged by the Huffington Post, Trump has frequently embraced alt-right codes on social media, and both Trump and members of his staff have retweeted white supremacists. Such behaviors, regardless of their intent, have been construed by members of the alt-right as a direct show of support from the Trump administration, emboldening them in advancing their racist beliefs. After Trump tweeted the CNN GIF, members of The_Donald reacted as though the president has been lurking among them. “THE EMPEROR READS OUR SHITPOSTS AND RE-TWEETS YOURS!!!” exuded one happy commenter.
Though the tweet itself may not have explicitly condoned violence, and can be read as hyperbolic, it was read by some as connective tissue joining Trump to his alt-right supporters — and the harassment they showered on journalists like freelance writer Jared Yates Sexton. Sexton, who was one of the first people to unveil the tweet’s origins, was showered with online abuse, as he detailed on Twitter.
“I received numerous threats. I was told people wanted to shoot, strangle me, hang me, throw me out of a helicopter,” Sexton wrote, describing the alt-right’s reaction to his screencapping of HanAssholeSolo’s undoctored racial slurs. “Now [my] articles are showing up on Neo-Nazi websites, there are videos spliced with Goebbels telling me not to test his patience.”
Members of the alt-right downplayed the GIF as doing nothing to incite direct violence; some compared the situation to recent controversies over a production of Julius Caesar in which a Trump analogue was assassinated and a photo of Kathy Griffin holding a likeness of Trump’s severed head, accusing those who are upset by Trump’s tweet of hypocrisy.
But whatever your views are on the inherent violence of the GIF itself, its source and the reaction of The_Donald’s community to the president’s use of it makes it clear that many members of the alt-right perceive Trump to be one of them. And regardless of Trump’s feelings on associating himself with the violent hate speech regularly deployed by his alt-right followers, nodding to their presence in a tweet like this, voluntarily or not, does nothing to minimize their movement.
Kuo's claim has since been backed up by Bloomberg in a report suggesting Touch ID will be replaced by advanced facial recognition technology in the iPhone 8, lending more credence to Kuo's prediction. As the OLED iPhone will not support fingerprint recognition, we think it may have to rely on facial recognition to ensure security. As such, we believe Apple (US) will be very demanding as regards the quality of 3D sensing, thereby increasing the difficulties in hardware production and software design.
Unable to settle on a contract deal, both actors have exited the series.
Stars Daniel Dae Kim and Grace Park are leaving the CBS hit Hawaii Five-0 after seven seasons, the result of a breakdown in salary negotiations, Variety reports.
Both actors have starred in the 2010 reboot of the 1968 show since its premiered, but neither was able to reach an acceptable deal with the network for the next season. The final offer made to the actors from CBS was reportedly 10 to 15 percent lower than co-stars Alex O’Loughlin and Scott Caan earn, according to Variety.
O’Loughlin and Caan also have back-end deals, which allows them to earn a cut of the show’s profits. It’s not clear whether that was on the table for Park and Kim, or what higher — or lower — offers CBS had presented to the actors prior to that last potential deal.
The absence of Kim and Park’s characters, cousins Chin Ho Kelly and Kono Kalakaua, will be addressed in the season eight premiere, though it’s currently not clear how. Season seven ended with up-in-the-air storylines for both characters, with Kelly ready to head a task force in San Francisco while Kalakaua left to investigate a sex trafficking ring involving children.
Of Kim’s departure, Hawaii Five-0 executive producer Peter Lenkov said in a statement, “There was no other actor who I’d want to play Chin Ho Kelly … Needless to say, Daniel has been an instrumental part of the success of ‘Hawaii Five-0’ over the past seven seasons.” Lenkov added, “Grace’s presence gave ‘Hawaii Five-0’ a beauty and serenity to each episode. She was the consummate collaborator, helping build her character from day one.”
While the casting shake-up may be saddening for many fans considering Kim and Park’s prominent and well-liked roles on the show, their decision to leave may reflect a larger issue for actors of color. This group is historically paid less than their white male co-stars. Kim has been particularly outspoken about this issue, telling the New York Times last year, “The harsh reality of being an actor is that it’s hard to make a living, and that puts actors of color in a very difficult position.”
Neither Kim nor Park have publicly addressed the pay differences or salary negotiations for season eight. But in general, a University of Southern California study found that in 2015, only 3 to 4 percent of broadcast and cable scripted roles went to people of Asian descent and “at least half or more of all cinematic, television, or streaming stories fail to portray one speaking or named Asian or Asian American on screen.” The types of roles — whether speaking or non-speaking, regular or recurring — has an impact on how much an actor earns. Kim and Park held regular speaking roles, and for that reason, their presence in the series — and now fight for pay on par with their white, male co-stars — didn’t go unnoticed.
There were early signs that this may have been the outcomes for both actors. Kim has said that his recent interest in the production side of TV, where he can “create worlds from the ground up,” led to his role as a co-executive producer on ABC’s new series, The Good Doctor. Then on June 8, TV Line reported that Hawaii Five-O is seeking a new regular female lead. The character Tani is described as both a current lifeguard and stubborn but courageous former police academy candidate who was kicked out for cheating on a final exam and knocking out a training officer.
Both pieces of news could mean Park and Kim’s negotiations had been taking place for a while. And though the actors’ departures perhaps shouldn’t be viewed as that much of a surprise, it’s still adds to a somewhat disheartening Hollywood trend.
This is the first time in his 17-year rule that Assad is appearing on a Syrian banknote.
Syria released a new banknote featuring Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s portrait over the weekend, and there are already several theories as to what this might mean for the ongoing civil war between Assad’s government and domestic opposition forces.
Some experts, such as Joshua Landis, a Syria scholar from the University of Oklahoma, believe the introduction of Assad’s face on Syrian currency for the first time in his 17-year rule is a not-so-subtle assertion of his strength over the country.
But others, particularly the poor living in Syria, are more preoccupied with the value of the new banknote (2,000 pounds — the highest denomination for the currency) and what it suggests for Syria’s economy.
#BREAKING - Largest banknote for #Syrian Pound introduced: 2,000 Syrian Pounds (worth $10USD), with Bashar al #Assad on, first note with him pic.twitter.com/xj1Bj2k5B1
— SURA (@AlSuraEnglish) July 2, 2017
Valued at 2,000 Syrian pounds (approximately $4 USD), the new banknote will replace the 1,000-pound banknote as the highest denomination in Syrian currency. The introduction of the note could be read as a reflection of the country’s weakening economy, wrote the Washington Post.
Since 2011, the Syrian currency has gone from 47 pounds to the dollar to more than 500 pounds to the dollar. This means the Syrian pound is now worth less than one-tenth of what it was worth before the civil war started six years ago. The currency’s plummeting value means Syrians have had to go shopping with thick bundles of notes.
Upping the highest denomination of the Syrian currency would be one way to address the weakening Syrian pound, but the government has gone out of its way to deny this.
Syrian Central Bank governor Duraid Dergham said on Sunday that the government had been printing 2,000-pound notes for years, but only decided to release them now after the exchange rate had stabilized. If the note had been released earlier, “it would have been understood as a sign that the nation is not well and that the situation is in crisis and unstable,” Dergham said.
He added that there’s “no need to panic” that the new bank note will worsen the inflation rate, which was a whopping 52 percent in July 2016. (Just for scale, the US inflation rate for the same period was 0.8 percent.)
Assad’s serious-looking portrait on the new banknote is also raising eyebrows.
Landis, who is the director of the University of Oklahoma’s Center for Middle East Studies, told the Washington Post that the banknote reads like a declaration of Assad’s new approach to his rule. Once thought of as a reformer, the Syrian president has now made clear his intentions as an authoritarian after six years of brutal civil war.
“Assad has reverted to type,” Landis said. “He can no longer be seen as the kinder, gentler Assad. He also needs to reassert the authority of the state — which is him. What better way to do it than by putting his face on a new bill?”
Even though the Assad regime has made significant military gains in recent months, calls for the president to step down have persisted. This new banknote featuring his profile might be Assad’s rather unsubtle way of telling his political opponents, and the many international players who have been brought into the conflict, that he’s here to stay.

Samsung built a similar feature, iris scanning, into its Galaxy S8, which has not proven to be foolproof. Hackers have successfully bypassed the feature using a printed photo with a contact lens on top of it, and in a video, a launch version of the S8 was shown being fooled by a photograph alone. The sensor's speed and accuracy are focal points of the feature. It can scan a user's face and unlock the iPhone within a few hundred milliseconds, the person said. It is designed to work even if the device is laying flat on a table, rather than just close up to the face. The feature is still being tested and may not appear with the new device. However, the intent is for it to replace the Touch ID fingerprint scanner, according to the person. An Apple spokesman declined to comment.

July 4th is about cookouts and fireworks — but also patriotism, at least in theory. It's a time in which Americans are supposed to celebrate their country's founding and successes. "Proud to be an American," and all that.
That kind of uncritical patriotism might be a tough pill for a lot of people to swallow, especially given 2017's political climate. Luckily, there are more sophisticated ways to understand "love of country" than uncritical endorsement of its history. Perhaps one of the best insights into the nature of a more sophisticated patriotism comes from Scottish philosopher Alasdair MacIntyre, in an essay titled "Is Patriotism a Virtue?"
MacIntyre argues that the answer to that question is a qualified yes, provided we understand patriotism in the right fashion. He sees patriotism as going beyond mere love of country or even willingness to criticize it, instead defining it as a core foundation of people's lives — a kind of grounding that allows us to be our best selves:
I understand the story of my life in such a way that it is part of the history of my family or of this farm or of this university or of this countryside; and I understand the story of the lives of other individuals around me as embedded in the same larger stories, so that I and they share a common stake in the outcome of that story and in what sort of story it both is and is to be: tragic, heroic, comic. A central contention of the morality of patriotism is that I will obliterate and lose a central dimension of the moral life if I do not understand the enacted narrative of my own individual life as embedded in the history of my country. For if I do not understand it I will not understand what I owe to others or what others owe to me, for what crimes of my nation I am bound to make reparation, for what benefits to my nation I am bound to feel gratitude.
MacIntyre's patriotism is that it doesn't require you to fit into any kind of binary, either loving your country or hating it. It's about understanding the way in which you are bound to your country, the ways in which its prides and sins shape the way you relate to other people the world over. Absent a sense of connection to your own country — a sense of shared responsibility for what happens in your nation— it will be hard for you to live a fulfilling and moral life. Patriotism is less about celebration of government, then, than it is about caring for the people who you share your country with.
There's plenty to critique about MacIntyre's ideas. But the essay is thought-provoking and, at very least, worth a read between beers.
